Why Ron and Hermione were meant for each other?

J. K. Rowling took all of us through the magical gate of platform no. 9 and 3/4 at Kings Cross Station into the Wizarding World. Very beautifully written, she gave a great new look at the way of literature for kids who can now not only read what they love, like magic and adventure, but they can learn from the texts as well. As there are various life changing statements given in the book by J. K. Rowling through the words of Albus Dumbledore, Sirius, Harry and others.

It is quite obvious for all the people, who have actually read the books or have watched the movie series of Harry Potter, that Ron and Hermione ended up together. But few years ago just one statement by the author of this magical series, J. K. Rowling, telling the press that she made a mistake by keeping Ron and Hermione together makes the whole point of the build-up of the story's main couple worthless.

And thus today I am solely going to concentrate on the fact that why Ron and Hermione are the best couple. I wouldn't try to contradict her opinion after all she was the one who created this world and she could easily have made Harry say all the words that Ron ever said to Hermione and make the whole thing change just like that. But I would like to state my opinion as to why Ron and Hermione were always meant to be together by gathering informations from all the books which were already there before she made that statement except for the Deathly Hallows as it is already known that they got together in the end.

So the question that we are going to deal with is how much they were in love with each other before the Deathly Hallows. It was never one-sided or a love-at-first-sight thing rather how their story brew slowly in the background when Harry was busy fighting the evil.
Well, I know many people who have watched the movies would say that Hermione was more comfortable with Harry than with Ron or they had better chemistry than Ron and Hermione. And there are even theories of Hermione to have actually been in love with Draco. Even I was one of them till I actually read the books. You cannot deny the fact that Daniel and Emma looked much like a couple onscreen than Rupert and Emma. To me Ron and Hermione seemed to be brother and sister rather than a couple whenever I watched the movies.  But it has to be known that the characters of Harry, Hermione, Draco or even Ron for that matter of fact were being played by kids having their own set of emotions and the director's perspective on the stories where also a critical element for how the movies ended up being very different from the books.

Though there were subtle hints as to the relationship between Ron and Hermione in the previous movies, it was only when David Yates came to direct the rest of the series you would be able to see the relationship between Ron and Hermione brought into limelight onscreen for the first time.

Some fans of the books series even stated that Hermione and Ron are the worst possible couple as they are the most incompatible characters of the series. They fight all the time, they seem to disagree on each other's opinions most of the time and mostly Ron ended up mistreating the girl he so-called "loved". If it would have been real life they would have broken apart after couple of years of dating and would never have ended up getting married to each other.

But there are some things that brings a different perspective to these characters that we are going to discuss in this article. Before we actually go to why Ron and Hermione were meant for each other we need to know how the characters of the books were.

Character of RONALD WEASLEY:

The books obviously contained many details which had to be left out to wrap the movies in a proper time frame within three hours. But what hurt me the most was the character of Ron was actually shown to be dim-witted which is completely contrary to what the character is from the books. He is the sole person of the trio who is directly connected to the magical world, whose father works in the Ministry to give him a different perspective on the wizarding world and thus in the books in that way he gave Harry and Hermione, both of whom were raised in Muggle families, information that they possibly cannot know.

Ron was the sixth amongst the sons and daughter of the Weasley Family, all of whom were better than him and were always made an example of which he had to live up to. Bill, Charlie and Percy were prefect for Gryffindor House and Bill and Percy were selected as Headboy, not only that Fred and George constantly made fun of him and Ginny was the only person he had in the family whom he could talk to properly but even she, later on, can be seemed to irritated as he was constantly around him and obviously she wished to have some independence. In the latter books, she turned out to be a Quidditch Champion, playing well in the position of Seeker as well as Chaser.

Though he was selected as a prefect in his fifth year his siblings didn't stop making fun of him. Living in the family of such siblings he grew up having insecurities and doubts about himself which can be seen when he goes for Quidditch tryouts or when he sees Hermione with Victor. That was the thing that the Locket of Salazar Slytherin saw in him when it was opened, his insecurities. To his own opinion, he was average in everything, he was always the Dark Horse of the family, he was chosen after everyone else.

But when he met Harry and Hermione for the first time in the train, he never felt those insecurities, he could talk to them without being made fun of or without being downsized by either of them. But he felt otherwise when it came to the Tri-wizard Tournament, he saw Harry being selected as a champion when he was wishing to be a Tri-wizard Champion himself. For all he could think was that the one he calls as his best friend actually betrayed him by putting his own name without even telling him.

Hermione was the one who understood this. Well, he might have actually confided in her but that part we did not get to know as this whole series is actually from the perspective of Harry Potter and whatever happened without his presence can only be guessed and not clearly be known.

It might be a possibility that due to his insecurities he never even mentioned to anyone how he felt about Hermione as he thought his brothers and sister would make fun of him, his best friend has a lot on his plate for him to help him in his petty issues and obviously he was not going to tell how he felt about Hermione to her as he thought that why would such an intelligent girl like her even want to be with an average person like him.

It was clearly seen in the Order of the Phoenix book when he applied for the position of Keeper as he thought that Hermione only loved Quidditch players. And when he won the Quidditch Cup at the very end he was so excited to know how his friends felt about his performance but came to know that they sneaked out of the game to help Hagrid. He was sad again for his friends again chose someone else above him but could not possibly hate them because when he came to learn why they did so he was not bothered about himself but rather the problem in hand.

When it came to the Half-Blood Prince books, he still had faith that somehow he will be able to tell Hermione how he felt but Hermione, to him, never seem to have noticed Ron at all. She was invited to the Slug Club along with Harry and his sister Ginny but he was left alone. His insecurities grew even more and thus by the time when he saw that she didn't even believe that he can win the game in his own accord without having to drink the lucky potion, Felix Felicis, he had already lost all his hopes for winning Hermione's heart at all and thus it can be even seen in his actions. And he finally chose the girl who he thought loved him above all without any question, who actually gave him priority, unlike Hermione who as per his thoughts didn't care about him. Why Lavender selected Ron was clear as he was now being referred to as the "King". Everywhere he went he was being chanted by 'Weasley is our King' song and he was "interesting".

But when he was poisoned it could actually be known how he really felt as in his unconscious state he managed to say only one word that too was the name of Hermione. Deep down he was always in love with her and that he never mentioned to any other person.

He always had a good heart. He started liking Hermione from the moment he saw how she protected him and Harry from punishment by lying to a teacher in his first year which he could not believe she would do. But he fell in love with Hermione in their third year, when he saw how she was heartbroken when Buckbeak was sentenced to death and he understood that she had a good heart just like he does.

Character of HERMIONE GRANGER:

Hermione was a Muggle-born who was completely oblivious to the wizarding world and thus she put all her effort in studying all books she could and tried to know everything as she never wanted to be surprised at things. It can be seen when all the children was bewildered by the bewitched ceilings of the Great Hall she kept her calm and stated its reason for being so.

Unlike Ron, she had no brothers or sisters to talk to or had much friends before coming down to Hogwarts. It can be seen at times that she was introverted as well by the fact that the only person she ever talked to as a friend was Harry, Ron, Ginny and Hagrid. She never cared about looks as she herself carried a bushy hair and slightly bigger front teeth.

But at their fourth year when she got a chance she repaired her front teeth at Madam Pomfrey's and made it even. She wanted to be good-looking as well since she thought that Ron didn't care about her because she was not pretty. It was not her fault in particular but rather because of how Ron reacted while around the Veelas or when he said that he would be asking someone who is beautiful, to the Yule Ball.

Hermione was attracted to Ron ever since he helped in winning the chess match while chasing after the Philosopher’s Stone. As when she said there are more important things than intelligence that is friendship and bravery, both of what was actually shown by Ron till that point. But probably realised it was more than just a mere attraction in her sixth year while she was smelling the Amortentia, the most powerful love potion which is supposed to smell differently to each one according to what attracts them, she never completed her sentence in the book, though in the movie she said spearmint toothpaste which reminded her of the moment with Ron when they were at the Burrow that year.

"In a 2007 webchat, J.K. Rowling identified the smell as being Ron’s hair, saying: ‘Every individual has very distinctive-smelling hair, don’t you find?’ No wonder Hermione went quiet!"

She got upset when Ron stopped taking to her, like the time when Ron believed that Crookshanks ate Scabbers and completely stopped talking to her for months. She cried for days and only confided in Hagrid. She was obviously jealous when he was obsessing about the Veelas or when Fluer kissed him after she thought Ron saved Gabrielle, her sister, or at the Burrow how he reacted when Fluer was around him or when he was staring at Madame Rosmerta in the Three Broomsticks. But she was shattered when he chose Lavender over her. She was not jealous anymore but rather she either cried while seeing them together or she actually mocked his relationship with her and was angry at the mention of it.

If you want to read more about Hermione's feeling for Ron, you can check out the Pottermore site. It has a whole article dedicated to it. (29 signs that Hermione liked Ron from the start.)

So coming to the conclusion as to why they are actually a perfect couple I would have to say if two person were in love with each other, for such a long time, since they were children, who had the purest of hearts, I think they would actually stick with each other for the rest of their lives as well. And they both had insecurities which were subsided when they were around each other. And what kind of conversation would they be having after marriage as stated before would only have to be guessed. But one thing that is to be kept in mind they were obviously having some kind of conversation worthy enough for Hermione to show up at the Burrow's year after year before the arrival of Harry. They must have some conversations when Harry had not yet arrived. She came to the Burrow's days before Harry and obviously she was not avoiding Ron, the one who was atleast her classmate, and only talking to Ginny.

But I would really like to know what are your opinions on their relationship. And why didn't Hermione ever celebrate her birthday at Hogwarts?? When precisely she mentioned to the Ron and Harry that her birthday was in September. Neither Harry nor Ron ever asked when the date was nor presented her on her birthday? Even Ron actually never celebrated his birthday till in his sixth year. But both Ron and Hermione showered Harry with gifts on his birthday every year. I don't hate Harry but what was that all about??
