Padmaavat Full Movie Review
I am highly excited to be able to review this movie. The movie for which we have been waiting for months, hit the theatres on 25th of January. Ever since the announcement of the movie the country has seen many people vehemently protesting and making a scene out of it.
Today I went to watch the movie. As expected the movie theatres are housefull. And why shouldn't it be the moviegoers have been waiting for this for quite a long time now and thus the eagerness grew more and more as the release date closed in.
How was the movie? Well, to explain this I have divided this post into small segments for better understanding of the movie. Some segments of the movie was truly mesmerising but some were not really as per expectations.
Visual Treat:
It is well known to all of us that any Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie are known for it costumes and set design and this movie is not any less to that. From the moment we are introduced to our lead characters till the end one can find Bhansali’s signature. He has given us fans the opportunity to be able to observe such a piece of art.
But when it comes to the computer graphics, the movie has few bad moments. At some places it clearly shows the use of CG, especially the animals and the background. The animals at some places looks like watching an animation movie rather than original. The fire is what is the best part about the computer graphics in the movie.
Background Score:
The background score is highly inspiring. When I heard it at the time when the movie started it gave me goosebumps. It not only is inspiring but empowering as well. Yes, there is just that one background score used for the three lead characters but the music itself speaks about how the characters are.
Acting:
Shahid Kapoor-
There are some moments it felt flat. I was not a fan of Shahid Kapoor's standing with the same expression. But I loved everytime he was showed as vigorous. The way he took on the mantle of a true Rajput- Bravery, Daring and immense Courage.
Ranveer Singh-
Truly speaking, I was not a big fan of Ranveer Singh before but after the movie it feels like 'Takht Palatne Ka Waqt Aa Gaya Hai'. It seems like we have a new Badshah in Bollywood and it is none other than Ranveer Singh. The way he has portrayed the character of Alauddin Khilji no one could have done it. Such madness in the character was needed and that amount of endurance as well. He has given a great example of acting.
Deepika Padukone-
Though it seems like her character is mostly shown as a depiction of beauty, grace and wit. There is so much depth to it. Deepika has given her best performance till date. She has done truly remarkable work by giving the character of Padmavati life. Though I have one small issue relating to her dialogue delivery. Her taking breath in between every important dialogue she delivers is very disturbing as it almost kills the dialogues. I don't know about you all but it surely bothers me.
Supporting Cast-
A movie is as strong as its supporting cast. They are the most important part of the movie and Padmaavat has some of the best supporting cast performances.
Aditi Rao Hydari has played the role of Mehrunissa, the wife of Alauddin Khilji. Her performance is very powerful. Even though she didn't share as much screen as the lead actors she gave her best performance as the Mallika-e-Hind.
Jim Sarbh has done a great work by playing the right hand of Alauddin Khilji as Malik Kafur. His character is shown as gay and he has given a noteworthy performance.
Anupriya Goenka has played Nagmati, the first wife of Rawal Ratan Singh. She has also given a good performance in the amount of screen time she has been given.
The best supporting actor in this movie for me is the bold and truly Royal acting by Raza Murad as Jallauddin Khilji.

Choreogrphy:
Dance-
There are only two noteworthy dance performance one being Ghoomar and other Khaali Baali.
Both of them are beautifully choreographed. Ghoomar shows the beauty of Rani Padmavati and Khaali Baali shows endurance and madness of Alauddin Khilji. The Ghoomar Song is one of my favorites from this movie. I can watch it on a loop all day long.
Fight-
The fight choreography looked a bit dull. At the end, when Rana Rawal Ratan Singh and Alauddin Khilji face each other at a one on one battle sequence they look like two kids playing with sword and shield rather than to be in a battle.
Direction:
Other than the choice of going for a long opening credits roll Sanjay Leela Bhansali has done everything extravagantly and beautifully visually and that is what we expect from his movies.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a great director and his directions are always enthralling to the eye. The way the movie is build shot by shot is dazzling. One would go in the depth of the movie the more they watch it and that is a true work of a director. Bhansali has been able to give his fans a visual treat with this movie.
Story:
The story of Padmaavat is an inspiration from the Epic Poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540. The story is awestrucking and is a depiction of empowerment of women in the 13th century.
The way a Queen took upon herself to not let her kingdom bent down in front of its enemy is what the movie is from it's facade. But how much depth it holds can only be felt if seen from upclose.
How a woman very courageously took the decision of self-immolation. How a man in the 13th century gave the woman equal rights. It is believed that a woman can only be as powerful as the man she truly looks upto. In this story, Rawal Ratan Singh is that man who is seen to be not only protective about his love Rani Padmavati but also have been shown to be giving full support to his Queen's decisions thus empowering his Queen. And that is what equality is. This is one beautifully placed message.
Other than that the story is of an average Bollywood movie where there is a love story and where the Bad loses to a heroic act of the Good. The climax scene of the movie is what is the best part of the whole movie. The way the Jauhar is shown is so visually appealing. It is the reason I would want to go watch the movie again. Not that I am inspired to commit self-immolation or anything but rather I am highly attracted to that particular scene.
I heard some people saying that the Rani Padmavati could not even die without the permission of her husband. But it is to be remembered this movie is set in the 13th century where women hardly had the right to speak forget about taking huge decisions about the kingdom.
I cannot say if it is the actual depiction of the Padmaavat Poem or not but this movie stands well above the ground with its work.
It is worth every penny spent on it. I suggest you all to go and watch the movie as it has a huge message and a great story to tell.
I would rate this movie 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
